What’s New in Windows 10
August 18, 2015 | By IGAdmin |
If you haven’t heard yet, as of July 29 Windows 10 is available as a free download. Yes, it’s available for free…assuming you are already running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and download it within a year. You’ll want to check out our article “How to Upgrade to Windows 10” for the all the details on the upgrade process. For now, let’s get a glimpse into some of the features we’re most excited about here at Instructor Gadget.
Device Agnostic
Although Windows 10 does have some shortcomings, it’s being touted as an OS (Operating System) that is device agnostic. That means it isn’t limited to just a desktop computer. Or a laptop. Or a tablet. Or even a phone. Rather, it aims to work across all types of devices and tailor the experience to the device your using. So, when you’re at work crunching numbers on spreadsheets with a mouse and keyboard – you can utilize the Task bar and even view the Modern Apps from Windows 10 as classic windowed apps. During the train ride home, you can check a few more emails and browse photos on universal apps. Once you’re home curled up with your tablet, continue browsing and playing across a platform that is familiar.
Cortana: Microsoft’s Answer to Siri and Ok, Google
Apple die-hards have been asking Siri for directions and other random questions for years now. Windows 10 users can also reach out to a virtual assistant, Cortana, to search for files, set reminders and seek answers to life’s hardest questions. Ok, so maybe Cortana doesn’t have her PhD in quantum physics yet, but as you use her across your devices – she’ll learn more about you, store that information and ultimately make herself more valuable. If nothing else, ask her to tell you a joke!

Welcome to the Edge!
If you are like approximately 93% of all internet users these days, you probably ditched Internet Explorer in place of Google Chrome back before Obama was elected. Windows 10 hopes to woo you back with Microsoft Edge. The key feature is designing it around what we do most in browsers today: share with others. You can draw, type notes, and take screen shots to share via OneNote, email, or social media.

Virtual Desktops
If you are like me, you use the same device for work and play. Virtual desktops let you create independent workspaces where you can keep all the applications you use for work in one space, another for researching your next vacation getaway, and still another for your favorite hobby. This ought to streamline efficiency for the mode in which you are working.
